Sunset Park: Beyond the Gowanus Expressway Competition

Using civic space to "center" a neighborhood and serve as a catalyst for its revitalization, this proposal for the Sunset Park section of Brooklyn won First Prize in an international design competition entitled "Sunset Park: Beyond the Gowanus Expressway."
Sponsored by the Southwest Brooklyn Industrial Development Corporation, the contest invited architects to envision what Sunset Park could become were the Gowanus Expressway relocated from its current viaduct above Third Avenue and placed underground in a tunnel.>>
In this proposal, the tunnel is placed offshore to keep its exhaust away from the adjacent neighborhood and minimize disruptions during construction.
Mr. Silverberg's project was featured in an exhibition and panel discussion at the Van Alen Institute in New York City in October, 2000.
The project has been published in Competitions, Vol. 11, No. 1 (Spring, 2001), and in Oculus, Vol. 63,
No. 6 (February, 2001).
