House Addition

Boiling Springs, PA, 2001

Recently completed in central Pennsylvania, this detached, three-car garage is being added to an existing, solar house designed by an architect in the mid-1970s.

The new garage echoes the shed roofs and simple detailing of the original house and, superinsulated, uses its south-facing orientation for passive solar heating. North-facing dormers provide cross ventilation. A glass-roofed colonnade connects the garage with the front door of the house.

Right: As the Site Plan illustrates, the new garage was placed to the north of the existing house, connected by the colonnade, which functions in a manner similar to a long breezeway. The new building is offset from the front door of the house, however, so that the view from the front door of the house remains open to the landscape beyond.>>
