HOUSE ADDITION / 2 of 2

Right: This view of new garage and colonnade from the southeast shows the colonnade in the foreground with its glass roof. Instead of leading directly from the house to the garage, as would a conventional breezeway, the end of the colonnade is punctuated by an "entry structure" with a higher, sloped glass roof. One turns left under this structure to enter the garage via a recessed entrance reminiscent of that on the original house. The existing house would be to the left, just outside this photograph.

Left: Attention to details such as the roof overhangs shown here add refinement and visual interest to an otherwise simple and straightforward building. The deep overhang, an integral part of the passive solar strategy, shades the windows in summer months during the hottest time of the day.

Right: The view of the garage from the northeast shows the rear of the building. A series of north-facing dormers provide diffuse light and cross ventilation, while introducing a strong rhythm on the rear facade. This side of the building is actually what is first seen on approach from the town of Boiling Springs. The construction debris that remains in the foreground will be removed and the construction area landscaped.

Right: The form of the garage echoes that of the existing, solar house, which was constructed in the 1970s. Both buildings are clad with board-and-batten cedar siding.
